As mental health awareness becomes increasingly recognized, healing seems to be something everyone is pursuing. But is healing really as simple as “taking a trip to Bali”, as people often suggest on social media? ;)
First things first, what is emotional healing and why is it important?
Emotional healing is about recognizing, making sense of, and working through emotional pain or trauma to feel better mentally and emotionally. It’s about dealing with unresolved trauma, past negative experiences, and emotional scars that might be affecting your mental health and day-to-day life. It is important because it allows individual to process internal thoughts and feelings, which can help improve overall quality of life.
Am I dealing with emotional pain/trauma?
Emotional trauma and pain can manifest in different ways, often deeply affecting one's well-being and daily life. You might find yourself avoiding places or situation that trigger unpleasant memories, frequent mood swings; such as sudden anger or irritability, or struggling with sleep (insomnia). Intrusive thoughts and flashbacks of traumatic events, are also the common signs. In relationship, an individual with trauma may find it hard to trust others (re; trust issues) , become overly dependent/independent, struggle with communication, or react intensely to minor issues. They might also project their own insecurities onto their partner, leading to conflicts. Additionally, some people with emotional pain/ trauma may turn to impulsive shopping, substances like alcohol or drugs as a coping mechanism, which can exacerbate the situation.

To approach healing, the first step is willingness—a readiness to understand yourself more deeply through self-reflection and self-acceptance. This process often involves confronting difficult emotions and patterns, which can be a long, sometimes lifelong journey. Emotional healing demands effort and the courage to step out of your comfort zone, challenging established ways of thinking and behaving.
