The C-Zone
“In the absence of a challenge, there is comfort. In the presence of comfort, there is no change.”
We all gravitate toward comfort because it's familiar and predictable. It gives us that sense of stability we all crave, making us feel like we're in control. But that's exactly why so many people get stuck in this comfort zone—it quickly turns into a safety bubble. The longer we stay in it, the more we risk stagnating. Growth can't happen in the comfort zone because there's nothing new or challenging. Picture yourself in a boat in the middle of a calm sea—smooth sailing, no waves, just peace. Sounds nice, right? Maybe. But as Franklin D. Roosevelt wisely said, "A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor."
Now, how do we approach changes in the right way?
Calculated risk is smart (and wise)
I wouldn’t recommend anyone make a decision without some level of planning. It doesn’t have to be a rigid plan where you know every detail (where’s the excitement in that?) It just needs to be enough to ensure you’re stepping out of your comfort zone. Whether you’re moving to a new city, changing jobs, leaving a toxic relationship, or picking up new hobbies, stepping out of your comfort zone requires not just a bit of courage but also... preparation. The truth is, while "getting out of your comfort zone" sounds like glamorous self-improvement advice, it comes with its own challenges. Starting something new is rarely a straight path. Make sure you’ve done your due diligence (like research and preps) to back up your exciting new move.
Baby Steps
I understand it can be daunting. When I made the decision to end a toxic relationship a few years ago, I wasn’t sure if I could endure the emotional toll (spoiler: I absolutely could!). Similarly, when I decided to trust my instincts and launch a passion-driven service (MW), I was confronted with significant fears—fear of failure/fear of judgment. Fast forward to 2024, and I’ve had the privilege of helping many many people. The fear of the unknown is valid, which is why taking small steps is crucial. Each step, no matter how minor, propels us forward, gradually leading us to our goals. Large, bold moves can often be overwhelming—they can lead to frustration or exhaustion, causing us to lose momentum. However, those small, deliberate steps are the magic to sustaining progress and continually nurturing your curiosity.
Support System
Having people who support you on your growth journey is a true luxury. Here's why: surprisingly, not everyone will be aligned with your growth plan. It's a hard truth, but even those closest to us might disagree with our life choices. Some may be genuinely concerned, while others might be envious of your courage. People often project their inner selves, and unfortunately, that includes their insecurities. That’s why it’s crucial to be mindful of who you surround yourself with when making significant changes. Choose those who will sincerely support your growth and help you reach your goals.
Accept and Manage
As mentioned earlier, stepping out of our comfort zone isn’t always a smooth process. It’s not without its challenges and discomfort. When things don’t go as planned, it’s important to recognise that setbacks are a natural part of the journey. They don’t necessarily indicate that we’re on the wrong path or that we should give up. Embracing the discomfort that comes with growth, managing our expectations, and being willing to adjust our plans when needed are all part of the process. Each setback provides valuable experiences and lessons, and in the end, the effort is always worthwhile.
Celebrate celebrate celebrate.
Your brain thrives on rewards when you reach milestones, so it’s essential to celebrate every achievement, big or small. Stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing new challenges takes significant courage. Acknowledging and celebrating your progress not only reinforces your efforts but also keeps you motivated for future goals. Whether it's a major accomplishment or a small victory, recognising and appreciating your achievements is key to sustaining growth and maintaining enthusiasm.
